An Instant Hack!

I don’t know about you, but I had officially given up ketchup… until I came across this unsweetened ketchup by Primal Kitchen!

Now, I know there are many ‘sugar free ketchups’ out there. But here’s the thing, most of them have maltitol and other stomach-upsetting-sweeteners which I avoid at all costs. And I am one of those people who places ingredients above ketosis (as in, I’d rather have honey or maple syrup than maltitol).

Which is why I’m so excited about this ketchup! Tastes great and the ingredients are ace: literally just tomatoes, balsamic vinegar and a handful of spices. That’s it!

The Sweetener

I know many of you guys with more ‘adapted keto palates’ might not even need to mix in a sweetener. I was, in fact, pleasantly surprised about how naturally sweet the unsweetened ketchup was right out of the bottle…!

Having said that, I have fed it to a couple of ‘not keto peeps’ and they didn’t feel the same lol. So I did a bit of testing around, and found that the best way to sweeten it is with some allulose syrup (this stuff is awesome, and you’ll see me using it in many recipes!).

But you can pretty much use whatever sweetener floats your boat- but it must be powdered! So anything from allulose (again, my favorite because no aftertaste and zero GI!), erythritol (some slight cooling aftertaste, but no biggie!), xylitol (ensure its not corn derived to avoid tummy troubles!)… or even some pure monk fruit (expect the most aftertaste)!

So get your blender out, make sure it’s completely dry, and process your sweetener of choice until powdered. Just make sure you wait a few moments for the dust to settle before opening the blender or food processor.

Or you can always grab a bag of powdered Lakanto (just note that its twice as sweet… i.e. use half!).

And if using xylitol, make sure to be careful if you have a pup around the house, as it’s highly toxic to the little guys! 🐕

I am SOOO with You Paola on the Primal Kitchen ketchup!! I have always disliked ketchup in the extreme and have never had it in my home very often even, as I have NO use for it what so ever!! Until I tasted Primal Kitchen’s!! I needed a ketchup base to make keto bbq and cocktail sauce so… something had to be done.
When I tasted it I was BLOWN AWAY that a product called ketchup could be SO full flavored, thick, rich and delicious! I am not a spaghetti sauce fan, no red sauce pizzas, not a fan of lasagna… just not really even a tomato fan.
Now I know I do Love ketchup!! Just not the Heinz type over processed?? I have found a place in my frig for ketchup after 65 years!! OH YEAH!

The ketchup is delicious just as it comes out of the bottle. No need to add anything to it. It tastes just like regular ketchup, imho.

Yes, organic tomato concentrate, balsamic vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and I like a little Yacon syrup but that’s optional.
