Paleo & Keto Chocolate Milkshake

An Instant Keto Treat!

If you’re in need of a speedy (or even instant!) keto treat (or summer breakfast!), this chocolate shake is it. Much like our much loved keto shamrock shake, this chocolate version is bound to have you swooning.

Using a high-speed blender here (think bullets) will ensure ultra creamy and smooth results. Just be sure to blend all the ingredients very well before you add the ice!

p.s. Dave Asprey gets full credit for introducing us all to the wonderful concoction that is ‘Bulletproof’. Worth checking out his site for more info and solid products (not sponsored in any way).

The Add-Ins

This low carb chocolate milkshake is very adaptable to your tastebuds and needs. Starting with the chocolate, we love to use a great quality cacao powder here for maximum nutritional benefits (think organic and from criollo beans).

Feel free to add anything from chia seeds for extra fiber (I sure do!), collagen peptides, MCT oil, hemp hearts, and pink Himalayan or flakey sea salt (seriously don’t skip, amps up the flavor a bunch!).

What do you guys add to your morning shakes?!

  • Add in ice and blend until thick and creamy. Do not over-blend, or you'll lose thickness and coldness. Enjoy right away!

Notes

Please note that nutrition facts were estimated using 50g of avocado (about half a medium one).
To break down the carb count for you: 4.5g (3.5g fiber) from 50g avocado + 3g (2g fiber) from 1TBS cacao + 3g from 1/2 cup coconut milk + 0.25g of vanilla extract  = 10.75g total - 5.5 = 5.25g net.
Enjoy and always be sure to read your labels!

This was ahhhhhmazing!!! I used macadamia nuts instead of avocado, (cuz I was out of avocado) and used the canned coconut milk with water and a little ice. Totally tastes like a real shake but better!!!!

  4. Carol says:

I really want to try this shake with the chia seeds! What measurement do you recommend and how much water will need to be added?

I just found this recipe after searching on the internet and I am so glad that I did. I recently started the keto diet and was told that eating avocado is a great way to incorporate healthy fats. Although I don’t eat avocado I was pleasantly surprised how this wonderful recipe disguises the taste. This shake is so delicious and is now my go to breakfast.

Just love the thick chocolateness of this super shake.
I used 1/2 cup of almond milk instead. Plus i didn’t have any coconut mils and used a frozen coconut iceblock instead. Really heaped spoons of Raw Cacao surely added that super rich chocolate. I couldn’t taste the avocado either.
Really helps curb my pang for chocolate at 4pm in the afternoon.

I seem unable to get a response, so am posting here. can you please resend download for “summer favorites”? Guess I’m fumble-fingers, my download line says _0_

Tried “nutella” recipe, had to stop and try again several times as machine was getting
hot. Worked better when adding more oil ….SORRY! just figured out this second, what I did wrong!
I didn’t use 3 cups of hazelnuts…… I used 3 cups of hazelnut FLOUR. Naughty! no wonder machine was overheating!

Hey Paola, awesome recipe, thanks! Quick question, if I may? Which one is alkaline, please? (I’m Menopausal, so I’ve been told to eat more alkaline!) ☺️

I make this recipe almost daily. But I use cashews instead of avocado. I like to add a couple drops of almond flavoring, and if I need more fat I can add avocado oil, or ghee, or cream. Dr Axe vanilla collagen makes this delish. I also like to add some Lily’s chocolate chips at the end and it’s just like a Starbucks double chocolate chip frap. Another good add in is choffey. I use about 1 tlbs. Gives a nice roasted flavor when blended in the vitamix.

  9. Erica Fletcher says:

How can I make this without the avocado? Is there a good sub? It leaves a bitter taste for me. I just can’t put it in a smoothie (although I love guacamole and in sandwiches)

  10. Dorrie says:

Has anyone tried this without the avocado? I am wondering if the avocado is a thickener. I am not a fan of it so I want to try it without it but thought I would ask first. Thank You

    • James Hoffman says:

The avocado makes it thicker and incredibly creamy. I don’t like the taste of avocado either, but I couldn’t taste it in this recipe and it is great.

      • Rebecca says:

While it tastes delicious, the nutritional facts are HIGHLY inaccurate. I used almond butter instead of avocado. Net carb is 37g! Even if I didnt use almond butter that would only take away 5g. They have erythritol listed to use 2 to 4 tbsp. Which is a lot…serving size on the package is 1 tsp at 4g, no fiber or sugar alcohol to subtract.

    • Diane says:

Yes, I make this all the time without avocado. I use about a cup of milkadamia nut milk to 1/4 cup coconut cream. The rest of the ingredients are the same.

  11. Adriana Gutierrez says:

I know the basic premise of this recipe is egg-free, but has anybody made an egg shake with the rest of these i gredients?

  12. Trisha parker says:

I bought this chocolate shake today and mixed it with water as directed. And all I have to say is OMG. it dose not need any tweeting. It’s like drinking Hershey chocolate milk. 👌👌 I’m a happy camper

Love this milkshake! Made it with high fat cream and almond milk instead of coconut milk and water and my teenage son came back for a second helping and stated ” I never thought healthy and tasty went together!”

This is the first recipe of yours I’ve tried, and wow! I’m so glad I did. I changed it up a bit to suit my own personal preferences and needs, but I will definitely be checking out your other recipes now too. You are a lifesaver for keto’ers. 🙂 This will probably become my standard post-gym workout meal.

  17. Tracy Barnett says:

If I make this at 4 am, and keep it in the fridge, will it still be good at 11 am?i would like to use this as a meal replacement shake and take it to work.

  18. Lydia says:

If one substitutes coconut milk out for almond milk will it still it have enough fats in it to satisfy hunger and fill one up?

  19. Harris says:

I have high quality raw cacao in chunks, do you know if I can blend this the same way before I buy the powder? Looks delicious. Thanks!

    • Paola van der Hulst says:

yes, but it won’t be completely smooth! Try blending them first with a little almond milk (it’ll taste different though as the cacao nibs have a particular taste… I love it, just more butter!) xo!

  20. Anita Gonzalez says:

Hi! This is a delicious recipe!!
Yet how to you calculate 31g of fat? The most I calculated was 16.5g. which is only half. Would you mind breaking it down like you did for the carbs?
    Thanks!

I’m a bit of a food snob – spent years teaching Paleo cooking classes – and I have been digging around for good keto recipes. This smoothie recipe is so, so good! For other people who are “recipe tweakers like I am: I find that 1 Tbsp of cacao powder and 2 Tbsp of Swerve is perfect for my taste buds. The flavor is so good that it can hide 1 Tbsp of gelatin and 1-2 tsp of MCT. This is my mid-day snack while I’m working. Thanks so much for this recipe!

  22. Kayla says:

I loved the taste of this shake! However I was a little disappointed after determining the macros for this shake, because if 2-4 TBSP of erythritol is used (I used Lakanto Monkftuit with a serving size of 1 tsp = 4g carbs) then that brings the net carbs to 24g (if used 2TBS as suggested) or 48g (if used 4 TBSP as suggested). I will try this recipe again with a teaspoon or two of that ingredient to ensure I remain within my net carb range. Just wanted to let you know, but a great recipe overall!

I love this recipe. I’ve been drinking this for about 2 weeks now. I’ve added stuff to this to make it have more protein. I add in my protein powder that has grass fed butter, MCT, whey, and collagen all together. I then add some chia seeds, spinach, and a few macadamia nuts. I love it!! Fills me up for hours. I really enjoy it thick so I don’t add to much water to it.

I LOVE this recipe, I have it four or five times a week, easily! It’s great for brekkie, great for dessert, and an amazing pudding if you don’t add as much water and let it sit in the fridge a few minutes. Definitely one of Gnom-Gnom’s best! Thank you!

This was absolutely delicious!! It tastes like a chocolate milkshake… actually better than a chocolate milkshake. This is my new breakfast. I have had bulletproof coffee for breakfast for years now but this was a welcome replacement. The coffee because too acidic for me. I used two packs of Stevia in the Raw and 1 tbsp of Jordan’s Skinny Syrup vanilla flavor to sweeten this instead of the 2-4 tbsp of swerve. I used 1 cup of almond milk and 2 tbsp of heavy whipping cream. No coconut milk for me. I also used a whole avocado instead of a half. I felt very nourished after drinking this. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
